Q&As

1 - 10 of 50 Questions

Q: My husband threw these blocks in our strawberry patch and later it rained. will the chemicals in this leach to our plants and strawberries?

2 Answers
  • Product Manager - Ag
A: Tomcat Bromethalin Bait Chunx are weather-resistant but will eventually break down with moisture. Remove any visible bait with gloves to prevent non-target exposure. Bromethalin is expected to degrade in soil and is not likely to leach significantly; however, due to a lack of data on plant uptake (e.g., strawberries), replacing the topsoil is recommended. The label requires placement away from edible gardens and use within bait stations outdoors. For further questions, contact Motomco Customer Service.

Q: If my 20lb dog was found chewing on a block will it kill him?

2 Answers
  • Product Manager - Ag
A: Consuming bromethalin bait is potentially harmful or lethal to dogs. The risk of harm depends on the amount of bait consumed, when the ingestion occurred and the age, weight, gender, health and genetics of the dog. Any ingestion should be immediately reported to the poison service number on the product packaging (1-877-854-2494) or a veterinarian.

Q: How many big blocks are in the container?

1 Answer
  • A: Howdy neighbor! The 4 lb. container of Tomcat Bromethalin Rodent Bait Chunx holds approximately 64 individual 1-ounce blocks. Each chunk is specially designed with a pre-drilled center hole so you can easily secure it inside your tamper-resistant bait stations. This bulk size gives you plenty of bait to effectively manage and eliminate tough rodent problems around your property.

Q: Is Tom Cat bait chunks effective with eliminating moles or voles?

A: This product is only approved to control the species listed on the label (norway rats, roof rats, house mice, meadow voles and a few other listed species). It is an effective tool to control meadow voles. We haven't tested it on moles or any other "non-target" animals and can't legally recommend this bait for use outside of the specific species listed on the label.

Q: Is there secondary poisoning with ise? Does the poison break down quickly once ingested by the rodent?

2 Answers
  • Product Manager - Ag
A: Bromethalin and its active metabolite, desmethylbromethalin have been identified in tissues of animals. The length of time it remains in the tissue may vary with the amount consumed, the frequency of consumption, the specific organ or tissue, and differences in clearance rates between individuals or species. While secondary toxicity from bromethalin is theoretically possible, experimental laboratory studies have not clearly demonstrated it, and to the best of our knowledge, there are no confirmed cases of secondary poisoning in wildlife due to ingestion of bromethalin-killed prey. You can reduce the risk of potential secondary poisoning by following label instructions and placement amounts and monitoring the property for carcasses daily and discarding them promptly. Other strategies to reduce risk include providing extra supervision for pets or companion animals, restricting them from the area, or considering temporary relocation of livestock during the rodent control effort.

It works well

My house is surrounded by woods, water, and corn fields. I've been using this product for years and monitor the bait traps around the house quarterly. Have never had a mouse / rat in house but have found them in the yard (dead) on trying to make their way back to the woods or corn fields.

Not impressed

I don't have feed stacked in barn or any other type of draw for the record. I do have a pack rat problem in the engine compartment of my 85 lease truck. I have placed this product inside the nest 4 times and each time it has been completely consumed and yet I still have a rat problem. Again I have no desirable food laying around for consumption so I would believe that their is not a large population of rats in the area. So the thought that these are just new rats is ridiculous. This morning I opened the hood to inspect for the nest that he/she keeps building regularly on driver inner fender and to my surprise you guessed it there was this rate once more. I placed 2 of those little cubes inside the nest and went about my day. I just checked at 6pm and found 1 cube eaten completely and the second cube had about 25% missing. The problem is not them consuming the product heck they love it. The problem is the crappie just won't kill the critters. I'm sure I must be at fault some how or maybe I just have super rats. Bottom line don't waste money on product unless you want to faten the critters up. Buy a live trap then just shoot with .22 much more satisfying after you have spent 12hrs re wiring your electric system twice. Also I have never written a review before so hope this was not long but facts are facts.

First choice for effective DIY rodent control

Have used Tomcat Bromethalin Chunks in the attic for decades, whenever we hear feet scurrying on the ceiling, roof rats, AKA black rats. No problem, we wear gloves. Not for squirrels, which make much more noise!

We bought this to get rid of rodents. It doesn't work. We placed some in our laundry room and have found partially eaten bars on the floor and the rat on top of the washing machine
