Scientists do not yet completely understand how Silver Sulfadiazine works. However, they do know it provides antimicrobial activity that is broad in nature. It can effectively combat Staph and E. coli strains of bacteria. It can be used in the prevention of infection where burns have penetrated skin. It can also bring relief to itching associated with the healing process.

Special Precautions

Never use this medication for animals allergic to sulfite drugs or this medication. In lactating or pregnant females, use with caution.

Side Effects

Silver Sulfadiazine's possible side effects include:

• Itching
• Burning
• Pain

• Interstitial nephritis
• Rash
• Burning sensation
• Skin discoloration
• Erythema multiforme
• Skin necrosis

• To prevent anything from getting into the cream or the wound, apply dressing in a closed room with low circulation of air. Apply the cream to the gauze and cut dressing to proper size for the wound. Either use a disposable instrument or sterilize it before using.
• Use enough cream to cover the wound, approximately 1/6 of an inch thick.
• When applied to fresh wounds, it is normal for the gauze to turn a brown color from the cream.
