Q&As

1 - 10 of 27 Questions

Q: Do we have to apply this ever year

1 Answer
  • A: You only need to recoat when Seal-Once no longer repels water. Clear allows the wood to grey naturally. How to test if it is time to clean and re-apply Seal-Once: Test every Spring. Walk out to your deck with a glass of water. Put your fingers in the water. Take out your wet fingers and flick the water off your fingers and onto the surface. If the water beads up in most areas, Seal-Once is good for another year. Note: Seal-Once will bead and then it will show sheeting: water repelling from a surface without beading (hydrophobic sheeting)- Larger pools of water. Both protect the wood. When testing for water protection. You are checking for immediate water repelling, not 10 minutes later. If the Seal-Once is no longer beading but is still sheeting water, the wood may look darker when wet, but the wood has protection from deep inside the wood pores.

Q: Methods of application

1 Answer
  • A: You did not if it was a deck, dock, siding, or fence. We will assume it is for a deck: you can apply the required 2 coats of Seal-Once water proofer with a brush. Apply 2 thin coats. If you spray or roll, you must immediately brush the area using a brush. It is called back brushing. Do not spray or roll and leave it, you must back brush it immediately after spraying or rolling, using a brush. Brushing is very important. You begin at the end of two boards. You will brush to the other end of the same two boards. Now apply a second coat to the same 2 boards. Apply the second coat within 5-10 minutes of the first coat. The second coat must be applied while the first coat is still wet. (Wet on wet application). Push the product into the wood with the brush. Spread it out evenly and not too heavy. More is not always better. Do not allow it to puddle. Wipe off any excess with a rag. This way, you never walk over wet product.

Q: Can I use this on plywood sub top for an exterior stone counter?

1 Answer
  • A: Plywood is notorious for absorbing moisture. Seal-Once will slow it down but not stop it. New pressure treated wood will need to weather 3 months in warm weather before you clean and apply Seal-Once. (Moisture content must be under 20%) FYI: Seal-Once is not appropriate and not tough enough for use on a boat, shop floors, trailer floors, sub floors, sub countertops, or roofing construction. You cannot apply stain, sealers, primer, paint, glue, epoxy, polyurethane, or varnish over Seal-Once. They will bead up and roll off. Also, you cannot apply Seal-Once products over stain, sealers, primer, paint, glue, epoxy, polyurethane, or varnish. Seal-Once will not penetrate leaving un-even shiny/sticky spots. We do not make any products for your project. You need an industrial sealer. We do not make that type of product.

No change to wood color

I used house wash and pressure washer to clean cedar. Let it dry a few days and then applied product with foam pad to soffit and with pump sprayer to siding, brushing to ensure complete even coverage and also second coating while still wet per instructions. Going to try roller on soffit to see if it drips any less. Soaks in well and dries pretty quickly. Not bad to work with but kinda difficult to get off skin, which is a good sign of its longevity. As a liquid it is like milk. When it dries you don't see it, at all. I would stress that it seems like it does not change the color of the wood hardly at all. Comparing to Cabot Australian Clear which I put on back of house which does darken and add golden color, however, it only lasts a couple years. Hoping this product lasts as long as it says 6-10 years.
