Q: I have an aluminum trailer that needs to be touched up. There is rust, previous paint and metal that I need to paint. Do I need to prime these spots first before painting? If so what is the best primer?

A: We're happy to help, Char! Before painting your trailer with Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint, scrape or sand the surface to remove any loose rust or previous paint. Then make sure the surface is completely clean and dry before sanding with 220-grit sandpaper. Remove all sanding residue before priming with Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Gray Primer. Follow the primer with 2 coats of the paint. Allow 24 hours between each coat. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rust-oleum-specialty-farm-implement-gray-primer-1-gal-1082771 — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Q: do you need paint thinner. or is it ready for spray painting

1 Answer
  • Rust-OleumSupport
A: We're happy to assist! Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint can be thinned for spray application, if necessary, with mineral spirits. For brush, roller, or airless spray application, thinning is not normally required. For airless spraying, if thinning is needed, thin up to 5% by volume. For air-atomized spray, thin up to 15% by volume. Do not thin with gasoline, lacquer thinner, or turpentine. Follow these guidelines, but refer to the spray equipment manufacturer’s instructions for oil-based paint; for airless spraying, the pump ratio is 30:1, fluid pressure is 1,600-2,400 psi, fluid tip is 0.013-0.017, and filter mesh is 100. For air-atomized spraying, the fluid tip is 0.055-0.070, fluid delivery is 10-16 oz./min. (if applicable), and pressure is 25-60 psi. — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

A: We're happy to clear things up, Jesse. Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint can be applied using a paint sprayer. For an air-atomized spray, we recommend thinning the paint up to 15% by volume using mineral spirits. Thinning for an airless sprayer is typically not required but can be thinned up to 5% by volume also using mineral spirits. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Definitely use hardener

Unless you have a month to deal with this project or time to spray five or six thin coats over a few days definitely use a hardener, I called rustoleum they said no do not need it , but I'm in southern Arizona where it's crazy hot and no humidity and it is taking a LONG time for this to cure and get hard, you will find several references on the Internet about using a hardener with this because it takes so long and if I had it to do over again would definitely do that , I do wonder if the majik implement paint is better, it has a hardener to use with it and lots of people use majik hardener with rustoleum

Thank you for sharing your experience with Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint. We do not recommend using a hardener to help speed up the curing process as this can hinder the paint from curing to its hardest finish.
