I cannot say anything about how long it will last, only had it in for a day. Im using it to contain my dogs in the 1/3 acre fenced yard. They have learned to climb the fence. We have tried shock collars, those did not really phase them. I decided to go with this unit. Figured if it was not enough, I can just upgrade. I installed 8 foot ground rod, ran a single poly-wire along the top of the chain link fence(using insulators) Hooked up the energizer, checked the voltages, well over 2000 volts. Made sure no weeds, plants, or any other grounded stuff was near the hot wire. I tested it on me first. 10 times better than the shock collars! Just a matter of minutes, the dogs were let out to be trained. Both have taken one shock, and both will not touch the fence now. Very effective. This fence trained within minutes. Gave up on the collars after months of training.

Did not do what it was supposed to do small animals was able to get in and out did not do anything like it said it would do.
