Nutrena SafeChoice Mare & Foal Feed, 50 lb. is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 98.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great feed for young horses I love Nutrena's Safe Choice line of products. I have used Safe Choice Mare and Foal on all three of my babies. I like that it is a low starch/low sugar feed and has all the micro nutrients that a growing foal needs. I also like that as a pellet, it dissolves quickly in water so that I don't run the risk of a choke event when introducing it to weanlings. I use it on my mares for six months prior to delivery and until they wean off their baby. I use it on my young horses until they turn three.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good feed Good feed. Our colts have done well while on this grain.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I purchased 8 months ago to feed my halter horse along with the Topline I haven't seen the bloom or the fullness. The mare and foal seems great but the topline IMO hasn't performed to what it says it's supposed to do

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good grain but hard to find The mares like it and seem to be doing okay. Only problem is this variety is hard to find. I have to call around to different stores throughout the month with my fingers crossed. Last month I ran out and had to temporarily switch to a different variety because I couldn't find any bags of the mare & foal. Don't know if I'll keep using a product that is so hard to find. It's more important to me that my mares have a consistent diet.

Does this feed have corn in it?

Asked by: Jill77
Hello, Thank you for the question. Yes, the SafeChoice Mare & Foal product does contain corn. If you are seeking a corn-free feed, then we would encourage you to look at our SafeChoice Special Care product.

nutrena safe choice-nutrena safe choice mare & foal feed, can I  feed it as a complete feed for a senior mare and foal.

Asked by: Benigno
SafeChoice Mare & Foal is designed to be fed with hay. It is perfect to feed at higher rates for lactating broodmares needing more calories (i.e. 1200# lactating mare could safely eat 15# per day, we would just want to ensure it was fed in at least 2 meals per day with hay). The foal can start creeping the feed alongside the mare as it learns to eat.

how much should you feed of this grain, to a mare who is 6 months pregnant? or should I wait to switch her during her last trimester?

Asked by: kaylee2018
Hello, Thanks for the question! You can feed the SafeChoice Mare & Foal feed throughout gestation, and just increase the amount as your mare reaches that last trimester. The feeding rate for the first part of her pregnancy is 0.25-0.5 lbs per 100 lbs of bodyweight, which is 2.5 to 5 lbs per day for a 1,000 lb horse. Once she reaches that last trimester, then it bumps up to 0.5-1.0 lbs per 100 lbs of bodyweight, or 5-10 lbs per day for a 1,000 lb horse. Find the feeding rate in there that maintains her in the correct body condition, along with good quality hay or pasture. Hope that helps, let us know if you have further questions!

I have a underweight senior horse. Can he be fed this mare and foal feed? Particularly to help his topline with a score of D?

Asked by: Mustangirl6
Hello, Thanks for the question. While the Mare & Foal feed wouldn't be our typical recommendation for a senior horse, as long as he can chew his feed properly, it would be OK - it might be overkill and more than he needs in some other nutrient areas, where the SafeChoice Senior or SafeChoice Original would be more suited to his needs. If you feed any of those products according to directions for his desired body weight and activity level, you should see his topline develop over about a 60-90 day period.
