Layers- Feed DuMOR Oyster Shell to layers free choice in a separate feeder or add 1 pound to 20 pounds of layer feed. Pullets- Provide DuMOR Oyster Shell to pullets starting at 18 weeks of age and continue feeding through the entire lay period.

My hens like it

My hens free range and are great foragers. I keep their feeder filled with layer crumbles, but I worried that they wouldn't get enough calcium if they are mainly eating stuff in the yard. Also, there are times when I'm integrating youngsters into the flock and everyone has to eat chick feed until the pulleys are old enough to lay eggs. So I keep a container filled with this oyster shell available. The hens do eat it and I haven't had any eggs with thin shells.

Steel wool pieces

I found fuzzy blobs of steel wool pieces in my 5-pound bag of DuMOR Oyster Shell. Not a lot but enough to have me spreading out the product and picking through before I put it out for my girls.
There is a thread on the Backyard Chickens forum talking about this right now and it seems it's also an issue with the Manna Pro brand and it looks like DuMOR and Manna Pro might be from the same suppliers?
It seems that steel wool is used to scrub the shells during processing and some of it comes off and gets mixed with the end product.
I'm not sure what the health implications are here but it's a little disturbing to see this when you're pouring out the oyster shell.
I will be looking for another source of oyster shell in the future.

Love the fact that there are no big chunks in this product. Girls seem to like it, I have dug in the bag and found no dark pieces or dirt/sand contamination. Really seems to help my ladies lay clean, quality eggs so I guess it gets into their system and does its job. Very happy and do heartily recommend.

Neither my ducks nor chickens would use this. I thought they just didn’t need extra calcium. Both flocks began having soft shell issues, chickens stopped laying. Went out yesterday and bought NatureWise oyster shell, girls CHOWED DOWN on it. Today I finally got a chicken egg for the first time in a week.
