Q: Is this safe for cows udders while feeding calf?
8 days ago- A: Thanks for reaching out about Blu-Kote, Suebee — that's a great question, and I want to give you an honest, complete answer. The short answer is: we can't officially say it's safe for calves to ingest while nursing, because we've never conducted the specific tissue residue studies that would confirm that. Those studies are expensive, and there hasn't been enough market demand to justify them, so it's a gap in the testing rather than a known problem. Here's some context that might help you weigh the risk. Blu-Kote's active ingredient is Gentian Violet, which doctors still prescribe for thrush in human infants today. There's some mixed messaging around it at the regulatory level — the World Health Organization has flagged it as a carcinogen in one document, but in another lists it as an essential medicine for developing countries. More reassuringly, recent studies from the National Institutes of Health haven't found a single documented case of cancer linked to Gentian Violet use in humans. And on our end, Blu-Kote has been on the market for over 60 years without a safety complaint. So while we have decades of real-world use and encouraging research pointing in a good direction, we don't have the formal residue studies needed to give you a definitive "yes, it's safe." We wanted to share all of this so you have the full picture to make the best call for your animals. Please let us know if you have any other questions — happy to help! Q: Can I eat the chicken and/or their eggs after treatment?
18 days ago- A: Karen - Here is some information to answer your question about the use of Blu-Kote. The active ingredient in Blu-Kote is Gentian Violet. There are conflicting studies/statements about Gentian Violet. The World Health Organization states that it is a carcinogen. However, in another document, WHO states it is a key pharmaceutical ingredient for developing nations. We have never done the tissues residue studies on chickens or beef cattle/dairy cows to test the time of withdrawal for Gentian Violet as the market will not support the cost. Gentian Violet is still prescribed for human babies with thrush. In addition, there are recent studies completed by the Nat ’l. Inst. of Health confirming there has never been a case of cancer from the use of Gentian Violet in humans. Blu-Kote has been on the market for 60+ years and we have never had a safety complaint. In addition, we recently received this response from a customer after sending them the above statement: "Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I worked in a pediatric office for 12 years and recommended gentian violet to treat thrush frequently, so I also assumed it was safe for my chickens. Blu-Kote is my go-to for injured birds and I will continue to use it and recommend it." Having said all of this, we have not done tissue residue studies, thus we cannot tell you that it is safe as you inquired below. We hope this information can provide comfort and help you make an informed decision. Kate from H W Naylor Company Inc.14 days agoHelpful?
