Nanking Cherry is an excellent addition to any landscape border or mass planting! Its lovely pink buds open into fragrant white blossoms mid-spring. In early summer, harvest an abundance of flavorful, tart cherry-like fruit for eating fresh, pies, or jelly. This hardy, ornamental makes a beautiful windbreak and is loved by birds. Nanking Cherry is a dormant plant selected by DeGroot, offering you the opportunity to get a head start to the season! Due to its dormant state, this plant may lack foliage until it is planted. There is no need to wait until after frost, this may be planted as soon as the ground is workable. This early planting prevents transplant shock and allows it more time to develop its root system. If your plant does have foliage, provide protection from frost. Depending on the climate and weather experienced after planting, this plant could take up to 4-6 weeks to break dormancy and show signs of growth. Guaranteed to Grow: Product must be purchased before June 1st. Sales receipt and UPC required. For refund, please go to: https://retail.degroot-inc.com/guarantee.

Q: Can this be grown in a container

1 Answer
  • A: Hi there! You can definitely grow the DeGroot Nanking Cherry in a container, making it a perfect choice for your patio or deck! Just be sure to use a large pot (at least 20-25 gallons) with plenty of drainage holes to keep the roots healthy and happy. Since these aren't self-pollinating, you'll want to have at least two plants nearby if you’re hoping to harvest those delicious cherries!

Q: I have 5 of these, they are 3 years old I bought from you. This spring they had lots of flowers, not a single cherry. Do they not pollinate each other? If not what variety do I need for cross pollination?

1 Answer
  • DeGroot
A: Dear Mainer, Thank you for your question. For these trees to successfully pollinate, they need to be within about 100 feet of each other. If your trees are planted within that distance, they should be able to cross-pollinate. Since your trees are now about 3 years old, you can expect them to begin producing fruit as early as next spring. It sounds like they are right on track, and with proper pollination and care, you should start seeing cherries soon! Feel free to contact us at sales@degroot-inc.com or (269)468-6714 with additional questions. Sincerely, DeGroot Inc.

Healthy and strong

I have only seen bad reviews with the degroot company but I am writing in hopes of bumping up their rating a little because the ones I have purchased are healthy and strong! The nanking cherry had a few leaves on it when I purchased a couple weeks ago and since one great rainy day, the stem shot new green happy leaves. No, I dont know if it will fruit where I am but I will give it a shot anyway. Great plant!
