Q: Can horned cattle use this? Scottish Highlands.

1 Answer
  • A: The openings on this feeder are about 2’ wide and could accommodate a horned cow that turns their head sideways but it’s not a recommended feeder for horned cattle. Our best feeder for horned cattle is our hay ring feeder which is available through TSC under SKU 1058938.

Q: Can u explain why this would not be advisable for horses?

Anonymous5 years ago
3 Answers
  • A: The 90° corners curve down at the top of the mounting points. If a horse were to rear up, it could get its leg caught in this area, which would be a huge issue. It's a suitable feeder for a horse, if supervised, but this is the concern that causes the manufacturer to recommend extreme caution.

Does the job, very satisfied

Feels sturdier than it looks. It pins together easily, and we staked it in the pen with 4 t-posts, wired securely at the corners. So far it hasn’t budged or bent. The bigger calves (700#) can squeeze in and act like they’re stuck, but with some encouragement they figure out how to squeeze out again. We have 2 of them and both are working well.

DEADLY ON CATTLE

COW KILLER. We purchased several of these feeders. Cattle crawl in and out of the openings constantly while feeding on the hay bale inside. In just a couple weeks of use two different 700 pound steers got their hind legs hung up in the lower rails. One broke his leg (the bone was showing through) and the other broke the feeder corner latches and pulled the feeder down on himself, breaking his back. Both died. Don't buy these feeders; they're trouble.
