The best time for dethatching is right before your lawn's most vigorous growth cycle—late spring from warm-season grasses and early fall for cool-season grasses. Not sure if you need to dethatch? The best way to test your lawn is to use a hand spade to remove a 2-3 inch thick plug from your lawn. If you see more than 1/2 inch of spongy, brown material between the blades and the topsoil, it's time to dethatch!

Brinly's 48" Tow-Behind Dethatcher was designed for dethatching large lawns efficiently. Two rows of flexible tine tips comb the lawn, extracting thatch and depositing it on the surface where it can be mulched by the mower blades or removed using a sweeper or lawn vacuum. The drawbar's adjustable mounting positions adapt to accommodate all tractor hitch heights. Unique to the DT-48BH is an inline wheel design, which levels the tray so that it follows the contours of the lawn without adding to the overall width of the attachment.

  • Maximum Thatch Removal: For larger mowers and lawns, a 48" working width and 2 rows of 12 independently flexing spring steel tines comb through a lawn, lifting thatch up and out of the lawn where it can be mowed or mulched to promote a healthier root system.
  • Ideal for Large Yards: Wide 48" working width is perfect for larger mowers or bigger greenspaces - covering more ground for quicker results.
  • Long-Lasting Construction: All steel construction, tines are made of durable spring steel; in the unlikely event of a breakage, a safety rod is included to catch the tine and prevent contact with mower blades. No flat rubber-tread transport wheels for durability.
  • Transport Wheels: 8" never-flat transport wheels are located behind and in-line with the tray to minimize footprint width and facilitate leveling.
  • Spring Steel Tines: 24 long-lasting, triple-coil strength 3/16" diameter spring steel tines stay flexible and guarantee performance.
  • Universal Hook-Up: A single, heavy-duty universal hitch pin is included to easily attach the Dethatcher to any rider or tractor and most any ZTR or ATV.
  • Simple Assembly: Includes easy pictorial assembly manual. Assembly video also available on Brinly's YouTube channel.
  • Made in the USA: Trusted Since 1839, Brinly-Hardy Company has been dedicated to providing quality, durable, and innovative Lawn & Garden Products built in the USA.
  • Product Support: Replacement parts orders can be ordered online at Brinly's website or by calling our toll-free number 877-728-8224. The Brinly Customer Service team is available to assist with questions or concerns.

Great Sturdy and Strong Product.

Purchased 04/2025. Will use in the Fall. Missing one hex nut for tines. PIA cause I didn't have one and I had to go to the store for one. Also wish it had a height adjustment handle like the cheaper 40 inch model. Didn't realize the height adjustment was different. Expected more for the more expensive model. Appears to be a strong heavy duty dethatcher however. No instructions for the 2 large lock washers? Bought 2 additional flat washers and put on outside of wheel mount bracket with lock nut and hex nut. Wheel was tight and spun freely. Also, as others suggested, I assembled starting with steps 3,4,5 then back to steps 1,2 to avoid any interaction with the tines. I expect no furthet problems with this item.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Works Great. Assembly Not That Difficult.

I recently purchased this dethatcher and it worked well. It saved me a lot of money by not having to pay a company to dethatch the yard. I went over the yard in both directions. The 48 inch model was helpful when working on a larger yard. It took a few hours to finish my 2 acre property and then a few hours to sweep up the thatch. I used a yard sweeper that I pulled behind my John Deere zero turn. I wound up piling up between 20-25 large wheelbarrows full of old grass. I would suggest doing this once a year if possible if you cut your lawn all year and let the clippings lay. I recommend this dethatcher at a very reasonable price. Assembly took just under 2 hours by myself and the instructions were easy to follow.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Purchased several weeks ago. Assembly was relatively simple and the unit is strong and well made. The tines are thicker than units I have owned in the past. I have already dethatched an acre of turf with superior results. Very satisfied with purchase. - Wynslow -
