Q: How do I sow this seed. I have pasture land that is being taken over by weeds. What is the best way to re-seed?

1 Answer
  • A: ✅ Best Way to Re-Seed Pasture with Barenbrug K31 Plus Clover Plant Mix: 1. Assess and Control Existing Weeds Mow or brush-hog the pasture first to knock down tall weeds. For heavy weed infestations, you may need to spray a non-selective herbicide (e.g., glyphosate) and allow time for it to take effect (7–14 days). If you don’t want to use herbicides, repeated mowing and overseeding may help slowly push weeds out over time. 2. Prepare the Soil Test your soil if you haven’t recently — clover prefers a pH of 6.0–6.8, and fescue also thrives in that range. Lime and fertilize according to your soil test results. Lightly disc, harrow, or aerate the soil to create good seed-to-soil contact, especially if the pasture is compacted. 3. Seeding Methods Broadcast Seeding (most common): Use a broadcast spreader to evenly spread the seed across the area. After seeding, lightly drag the pasture with a harrow or chain drag to help work seed into the topsoil. Roll or cultipack if possible to press the seed into the soil for better contact. No-Till Drill Seeding (ideal for minimal disturbance): If you have access to a no-till drill, it’s the best method. It plants the seed at the right depth and minimizes weed disturbance. 4. Seeding Rate Follow the label, but generally: 40–50 lbs/acre for new pastures. 20–30 lbs/acre for overseeding existing pastures. 5. Timing Best times to plant: Early spring (Feb–Apr) or early fall (Aug–Oct) depending on your region. Southern zones can still benefit from a March seeding. 6. Post-Seeding Care Avoid grazing until the new pasture is well established (6–8 inches tall). Mow lightly if weeds reappear before the grass gets tall enough to shade them out. Fertilize again later in the season if needed, especially nitrogen for the grass (clover fixes its own nitrogen).

Vague description of clover type - please improve

This is a somewhat unique product in the market. The combination of hardy k31 plus hardy clover is a great combination for groundcover That said - the description on the TSC site is vague - simply "clover"... while the Q&A someone asked if it is dutch white clover, and it is NOT. It is red clover. Depending on the variety and your climate zone, red clover is likely annual. Dutch white, on the other hand is a perennial plant, even in cold climates. This is a miscue in the Q&A and would be really nice info to have in the actual website listing/details of the product.

Great seed, please stock more.

Great product. I just wish they stocked more in the TSC stores. I use 3 bags to overseed every year. They only had 2 in my local store, and I had to order the 3rd bag online. This happens nearly every year. They never have enough in the stores.
