Q: Why don't you remove the Carrageenan every thing I read tells me it is bad.
6 years ago- A: Carrageenan is widely used in pet foods and human foods such as sauces, cheeses, ice cream, baby foods, meat etc., as it provides good water holding and gelling properties. There are beliefs, unsubstantiated by scientific evidence, that carrageenan is "bad" for pets. However, carrageenan, an extract from edible seaweed, is an approved food additive for safe use as a thickening agent in pet food. It is referenced as an approved ingredient in the Association of American Feed Control Official Publication and the Code of Federal Regulations, 21 CFR 172.620. It should be kept in mind that there are multiple types of carrageenan (kappa, iota and lambda) used for different purposes. Carrageenan often gets confused with the degraded version called polygeenan, which is believed to be associated with potential GI tract issues. We do not use degraded carrageenan (polygeenan). We use the kappa version for its gel strength in our pet foods.6 years agoHelpful?
