Common string trimmer head types include bump-feed, automatic-feed and fixed-line. Bump-feed heads release line when tapped on the ground, automatic-feed heads advance line through the trimmer’s feed mechanism, and fixed-line heads hold separate pieces of line that you replace by hand.

Some trimmer heads let you thread line through the housing and wind it with an external knob, without opening the head. Other designs require removing the cap or spool. Check the head’s loading instructions to see which method it calls for.
Both can have bump-feed, automatic-feed or fixed-line heads. The power source alone doesn’t determine compatibility, though. Match the replacement head to your trimmer’s model and attachment requirements rather than choosing by gas or battery power.
