A toggle switch has a lever you flip to open, close or change an electrical circuit. You’ll find this type of control on everything from shop equipment to farm machinery.
A maintained toggle switch stays in the position you select until you flip it again. A momentary toggle switch returns to its resting position when you let go of the lever.
SPST stands for single-pole, single-throw, which means the switch opens or closes one circuit. SPDT stands for single-pole, double-throw, which means it connects one common terminal to either of two other terminals.
These labels describe what happens at each lever position. ON-OFF opens or closes a circuit, while ON-ON switches between two connections. ON-OFF-ON adds a center position that leaves both connections off.
A toggle switch has a projecting lever that you flip, while a rocker switch has a surface you press on either side. Both styles can control electrical circuits, but their operating options depend on the switch.
