Horse Blanket Sizing Guide

Finding the right horse blanket size starts with an measurement. Use a soft tape measure to measure from the center of your horse’s chest, across the shoulder and along the side of the body, to the center of the tail. Keep the tape level and follow the horse’s natural body line without pulling it tight. Most horse blanket size charts are listed in inches and commonly range from about 60 to 86 inches, with some miniature horse and draft horse blankets falling outside that range. Compare your measurement with the manufacturer’s horse blanket sizing chart, since sizing can vary by brand, blanket style and cut. A properly sized blanket should cover the horse’s back, sides and hindquarters without hanging too far past the tail or leaving the chest and belly exposed. Fit matters just as much as the number on the size chart. The blanket should sit comfortably at the withers, allow room for natural movement and fasten securely across the chest without rubbing or restricting your horse. Check that the shoulder area is not tight, the straps do not drag beneath the belly and the hindquarters are covered without the blanket shifting out of place. A turnout blanket may need a slightly different fit than a stable blanket, sheet or liner, so always check the product’s recommended fit before buying. After your horse wears the blanket, inspect the withers, shoulders, chest and girth area for rub marks, loose hair or pressure points.
