PSI stands for pounds per square inch and describes air pressure. CFM stands for cubic feet per minute and describes airflow. Compressor specs often list CFM at a stated PSI, so those numbers go together.
Oil-free compressors have pump designs that don’t call for routine oil changes. Oil-lubricated compressors require oil checks and changes according to the owner’s manual. Both types still have other upkeep needs.
Duty cycle describes how much of a stated period a compressor is intended to run. For example, a 50% duty cycle over 10 minutes means five minutes running and five minutes resting. Check the owner’s manual for the model’s rating and time period.
The gauges display pressure, while the regulator lets you adjust the outlet pressure. On compressors with two gauges, one typically shows tank pressure and the other shows the regulated pressure going to the air hose.
Common accessories include air hoses, quick-connect couplers, plugs, tire chucks and blow guns. Some setups also include air filters or moisture separators. The right connections and accessories depend on the compressor and the air tools you plan to hook up.
