Q: I just replaced the Ammeter on my 6 volt 1953 Ford Golden Jubilee. When I reconnected the battery the Ammeter immediately registered 30 amps and the battery wire began to smoke? I have verified all my wiring is correct - Not sure what to do next?
5 years ago1 Answer
- A: There is only one thing that can cause the wire to smoke and that is the battery wire is connected directly to the ground. There are 2 possible cases that could create a direct ground connection to the battery wire. 1. The ammeter mounting bracket is missing one of the insulating grommets causing the battery wire to make contact with the mounting bracket that is grounded through the chassis of the tractor. 2. A ground wire was connected to one lead of the ammeter. An ammeter needs to be connected to the battery wire going in and out of the ammeter to properly read the load of the circuit. An ammeter should read 0 after connection. It only shows a plus reading with a properly functioning charging system and a minus reading when starting the tractor or during operation with a malfunction charging system.5 years agoHelpful?
Q: one side hooks to voltage regulator (+ side) what does the other side hook too?
6 years ago1 Answer
- A: Generally this ammeter is designed to be used as a replacement to an existing ammeter. If installing an ammeter the first time into a circuit it is important to understand that the ammeter needs to be hooked in series to the electrical system so that it can read the draw of the system. One end of the ammeter goes to the power supply, this can either be directly to the battery or in the case of most tractors the post on the starter solenoid that gets direct battery power. The other end goes to your charging output. If you have a regulator, it would go on the battery marked post of the regulator. If you have an alternator it connects to the alternator. Best to use a minimum of 12 gauge wires. The ammeter should read negative when cranking with the starter, then the needle will point in the positive when the tractor is running (presuming the charging system is charging). If the needle on the gauge points opposite, reverse the connections on the posts of the gauge.6 years agoHelpful?
Q: On your 30 amp meter gauge what are the size of nuts to attach gauge?
Anonymous7 years ago1 Answer
- A: The nuts are a number 10 screw fine thread (NF) with 32 threads per inch using a 5/16” wrench.7 years agoHelpful?
Q: does this work OK on a Ford 8n tractor converted to 12v negative ground?

- A: Yes this will still work on his 8N tractor converted to 12V negative ground.7 years agoHelpful?
Q: What type of electrical connection does this have on the back?
8 years ago1 Answer
- A: This unit has two studs on back to fasten wires to.8 years agoHelpful?
Q: What size is the ammeter in diameter? Specifically, what size hole will it fit in?
9 years ago1 Answer
- A: This is for a 2" diameter hole.9 years agoHelpful?
