Starter lawn

I used a 1lb bag in a 200 sq ft area to start a new lawn. I hand broadcasted on April 8th. I watered frequently, maybe 3-5 times a day. Temperatures were between 80-90 for the firat month. Germination took a lot longer than i expected, but these are unhulled seeds and temperatures weren't always above 85 daily which is really the sweet spot for this seed. It started sprouting after ten days, and didn't fully finish germinating for about 30 days. If I could do it all over again, I would. It was cheap and looks great. I recommend you grow it to 2 inches before your first cut, then as the summer gets going, especially if its your dry season like it is here, push it to three inches. My lawn had a set back from heat stress because I cut it too short, its roots were undeveloped, and because I tried switching to once a day watering. Definitely would not have the same lawn if I didn't switch back to watering 3-5 times a day. I still do that on 100+ days without rain. Hopefully when August and September come and temps drop back down into the low 90s and 80s I can cut back on frequency. Thanks Scott's!!

Lots of weeds growing. Most seeds did not germinate. Waste of time and money. I got more grass from the 1 lb bag than I did with the 5 lb

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Bermuda Grass and appreciate your feedback. It is normal to have some weeds germinate when seeding. There are approximately 10,000 weed seeds per 1 cubic foot of native soil. Soil preparation brings weed seeds to the surface. All Scotts seed is thoroughly cleaned and is 99.9% weed seed free, in fact The Scotts Advantage states weeds are removed from our crops by filtering Scotts seed 3 times. Our WaterSmart PLUS Grass Seed is harvested in June/July, well before the time of crabgrass maturity which occurs during late summer when it sets seed. Therefore its not possible our crop can be contaminated with crabgrass seeds. Soil amendments such as manure and straw often contain weed seeds. Weed seeds can be blown or carried into area prior to WaterSmart PLUS Grass Seed becoming established. Germination times on label are based upon the grass type in the bag that will germinate the quickest. Warm Season Grasses (Bermudagrass/Centipede/Zoysia/Bahia) should be planted in early summer. They require soil temperatures between 75 - 90 degrees (24 - 32 Celsius). In the spring it takes a lot of consistent warm temperatures to warm up the soil, especially in the northern states. Cool night time temperatures and fluctuating temperatures will slow germination. Cold weather will delay germination but will not hurt the seed. Both excessive moisture and not enough moisture can inhibit seed germination. Weed control used prior to seeding such as Crabgrass Preventer will prevent seed from germinating. Weed control product used on new seedlings - such as Weed & Feed products or selective weed controls for use on lawns will kill seedlings when they first germinate.
