Q: When can i paint the parts i treated? Is it better to use a primer before the finish paint?

1 Answer
  • A: Hi Neighbor! After applying Rust Kutter, you can paint after it dries to a smooth, dark finish (20-60 mins), but wait a full 24-48 hours for it to cure, especially if it's humid, and then prime with a suitable metal primer (like oil-based) for best results, as it acts as a paintable undercoat but priming adds extra durability.

Q: Can this product be added to water which will be used to wet a sharpening stone.

1 Answer
  • A: Hi Neighbor- Rust Kutter is primarily a rust converter, designed to be applied to rusted metal surfaces to chemically change the rust into a stable compound, which can then be painted over. While it contains ingredients like phosphoric acid and 2-butoxyethanol, which can have cleaning properties, it is not explicitly formulated or marketed as a sharpening stone additive or lubricant.

Great Product!

I got this product to use as an etching and primer for a trailer that I was going to build. I had a used frame and two axles that I had that had a lot of rust on it. I wire brushed the frame then sprayed Rust Kutter all over the frame. The project never got beyond this point. That was five years ago, the frame was out side all this time and did not start to rust.I think that is a good testament as to how well this product works.

Glad it worked for some, I wouldn't buy again.

This didn't work as expected. Used on a tractor and tractor implements. Scuffed the loose rust off and applied as directed. Understanding that it could take days to dry/convert. I waited, and waited, and waited days ( tractor, rims, fenders, and implements where treated in a heated insulated garage thats is kept at a constant 70°). Product seemed and felt dry so I washed it off as directed. I honestly didnt see much change to the metal, dried everything off with forced air and let it sit for a day to be certain it was completely dry before shooting the metal with primer. The following day or so I saw light surface rust in SOME places that had been treated. For me the amount of down time waiting coupled with questionable results just dont make it a worth while purchase. I did go over everything with another product that converted the surface rust into a black printable surface within 15 minutes then I primed immediately after.

Rust Kutter worked better than I expected. I used it on an old squeeze chute, it works great. It does take a few days for it to do everything it is supposed to, worth the wait.
