I've owned hundreds of chickens over the past 10 years. Initially I was excited about this "Rent A Coop" high-rise style chicken feeder because a lot of other styles have some downsides that this particular one seemed like it would avoid. I liked the capacity, the ease of install, the fact that this PVC won't rust, and the angled top that would prevent chickens from sitting on it and making a mess. I've had this feeder in use for less than 2 months, all of which has been a typical Minnesota winter. Unfortunately in less than 2 months we discovered that the "dirt and debris" inside the PVC was in fact a lot of mold!! Nasty mold! I've had a lot of interesting poultry challenges over the years but this is a new one for me. I've used other PVC style feeders and none of them ever grew mold! I'm thinking that the lack of air flow in this feeder style is what led to the mold growth, because other than that it's not a lot different than a slightly different PVC feeder I'm using in the same coop. My other PVC feeder is much, much taller and doesn't have a lid on it so it's getting good air flow and the chickens don't sit on it even without a lid. I thought this "Rent A Coop" one would be a nice secondary feeder but it is nasty and a waste of money. $69 wasted. I will be going back to using either galvanized metal feeders or my own homemade PVC pipe instead. I'm going to try to add pictures if that works on this website.
