Item Information

Purina's Wind and Rain Storm Fly Control mineral with Altosid (Insect Growth Regulator) prevents the breeding of horn flies in the manure of treated cattle. Wind and Rain Storm cattle minerals' large particle size and special formulation keeps the mineral from absorbing water and blowing out of the feeder. Exclusive Storm technology provides the ultimate in weather resistance to reduce waste and makes Wind and Rain Storm Formula more economical to feed than conventional loose minerals.

  • Fly control with Altosid (IGR) - Prevents the breeding of horn flies in the manure of treated cattle.
  • Balanced mineral nutrition - Wind and Rain Storm minerals contain the proper balance and ratios of all 14 essential cattle minerals.
  • Large particle size - Increased particle size and weather-resistant formula support reduced water absorption and less mineral blowing our of the feeder.
  • Consistent intake and less waste - Exclusive Storm Formulation nearly eliminates water retention and clumping or bricking. That means cattle will continue to consume the mineral even after its been wet. Though it resists moisture, it does not prevent digestion.

Purina Wind and Rain Fly Control Cattle Mineral, 50 lb. is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fly control Product Works but animals need to feed on it daily. We mix in their feed and we know our heifers are consuming it. Takes days to notice any difference. Will keep it around...works better than the tub.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it Cattle love it but it’s a little on the pricey side because they consume it so fast.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didnt work on my cows I am almost thru the bag and dont notice any difference in the flies on or about my cows. Poor girls are stamping and twisting as much as ever and they still have masses of flies on them. Will try a spray next maybe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from They know when minerals are needed We have used Wind and Rain Minerals with fly protection for several years and it is convenient to use and does an adequate job of reducing flys, but no noticeable affect on gnats. I prefer the granular product over the molasses tubs for a couple of reasons. The tubs are much more palatable and the cattle will go through a 125 lb. tub in a week whereas the granular provides the mineral content but they don’t stand around lickin sweet feed. The minerals are all pricey but I believe I’m getting what I pay for with Purina Products.

how much altosid is in this mineral grams per ton how much should they consume

Asked by: timgant
Thanks for choosing the Wind and Rain, here is the percentage. ACTIVE INGREDIENT S-Methoprene (CAS #65733-16-6) ........................................................................ 0.014 % Double check your tag for feeding rates, but most of the minerals we make have this feeding rate: Allow free choice to cattle. Cattle should consume an average of 0.286 ounces of this product per 100 lb of cattle body weight per day, which is equivalent to 4 ounces per day for a 1,400 lb cow.

Do you solely use this as the cows feed or is this a supplement that is added to their grain?

Asked by: JLS1292

Can this fly control be used for zebu cattle.

Asked by: ere13

Does the fly control keep flys off the cows or just keep the larva in the manure from breeding???

Asked by: Codycole63
Thanks for choosing Purina. The Altosid used in the mineral and tubs is not an insect repellent. It is an insect growth regulator which works by disrupting the breeding cycle. For the full benefit, it will take 30 days continual use and then throughout the remainder of summer. This is why we suggest to start the program 30 days before the last frost in the spring, and continue 30 days after the first frost in the fall.

What weight is the 4 oz feeding rate formulated to for the altosid? Or can you tell me what the label has for altosid concentration?

Asked by: allways
Thanks for your question. I do not have a volume measure for the 4 oz. feeding. Here is the percentage of Altosid inclusion: ACTIVE INGREDIENT S-Methoprene (CAS #65733-16-6).............................. 0.014 %

is this safe for horses?

Asked by: Pands65237
Thanks for your question. No, do not feed a horse a product unless they are listed on the label's feeding directions. We do not recommend off-label use or cross-species use of any of our products, even the all-natural/non-medicated products. There are different manufacturing measures taken for horse products to further ensure the safety of those products for horses.

Is this product safe in the pasture with horses.

Asked by: CathyTrey
Thanks for choosing Purina. No, we do not recommend horses have access to this product. It will not have followed are strict guidelines for manufacturing horse feed. We understand the concern about ionophores in horse feed. All of our horse feeds are made on ionophore-free manufacturing systems. Only feed to horses a product which will have them listed on the feeding directions. Let us know if you have any additional questions.
