To check for chalking rub your hand on the old paint. If there is a dusty residue on your hand that matches the color of the paint, it is chalking and must be cleaned.

A: This product will work on a metal roof under two conditions. First, any rust on the roof must be properly primed. The water-based latex formulation of this product will not stop rust. Secondly, if the surface of the roof is "chalking", the roof must be pressure washed before applying paint. The best way to check for chalk on a surface is to rub your hand on the existing paint.
