- A: The size of air compressor you need to blow out an irrigation system depends on the size of the pipes and the volume of water in the system: CFM: The minimum volume of air an air compressor should have is 20 cubic feet per minute (CFM). However, for optimal performance, professionals recommend a CFM of up to 50 for water lines that are less than an inch in diameter. For larger pipes, you'll need a higher CFM. To estimate the CFM you need, you can divide the gallons per minute (GPM) of each sprinkler zone by 7.5. PSI: The ideal air pressure for blowing out an irrigation system is between 40 and 80 pounds per square inch (PSI). 80 PSI is the maximum for rigid PVC pipe, and 50 PSI is the maximum for polyethylene pipe. Multiple zones: If you plan to blow out multiple zones at once, you'll need a higher CFM.
