'Purple Passion' has productive yields and is highly resistant to rust. This open-pollinated variety tolerates most climates and is generally larger than its green counterpart. These beautiful purple spears are often eaten raw due to having a 20% higher sugar content. 'Purple Passion' also adds gorgeous color to salads and other dishes when left raw but turns green when cooked. Asparagus should be planted in the spring in a sunny location. All crowns sprouted rapidly!

I was at my local TS 2 weeks ago and saw the purple crowns. I selected the heaviest bag that had whiteish roots to make sure the crowns were not too dry. The bag contained FOUR spindly crowns. I soaked the crowns in water with a little fish emulsion for 30 minutes to hydrate them. Next I planted them in my asparagus bed by digging a small hole, making a small mound, spreading the roots over the mound, and finally filling the hole. I made sure that the crown tops were not buried deep, because the spindly roots would not have enough energy to send a shoot to the surface. I lightly covered with leaf mulch and then watered. Two weeks later ALL the crowns were sending up tiny spears. I am amazed!

Non-Viable Root Stock

The 2 year roots were small, and dry. I planted all six of them anyway, and hoped for the best. I had several other varieties that sprouted new shoots, but these Purple Passion roots did absolutely nothing.

Dead Roots

I planted these up according to the directions and recommendation on line, but after a month, nothing is growing. It was a lot of work to get them planted, so I'm not happy.
