Q: who makes this food?

1 Answer
  • A: Our foods are manufactured in six facilities, all in the United States. Two are located in California, one in Missouri, one in Arkansas, one in Kansas, and one in South Carolina. We use some ingredients that are not USA sourced, like flaxseed and barley, both which originate in Canada. Lamb and lamb meal are sourced from New Zealand and Australia, potato protein from Germany, and dried chicory root from Belgium. There are ingredients that are critical to our formulations (i.e. folic acid and taurine) that can only be sourced out of China. Our choice is to either include these ingredients or manufacture our foods without them, which would not be in the best interest of your pet, in our view. Some pet food companies are making “China-Free” claims despite the facts I’ve outlined above. They accomplish this by utilizing a loophole in European law. European laws allow for ingredients purchased outside their continent, then reprocessed in Europe, to be labeled with European origin. We could likewise hide behind that loophole in the law, and tell you what you want to hear, but choose not to for obvious reasons. I’d rather you not feed our foods than to tell you they are China-free, when they are not. Food safety is our #1 priority and it shows in the amount of new business we get from word of mouth—friends and neighbors talking to one another, recommending our foods.

An excellent value: Good ingredients for less!

We bought 4Health after researching the effects of low-cost corn-based pet food on our pets. We were disturbed that so many of the health problems associated with these cheaper foods were present in our animals. But, like many in the present economy, we couldn't figure out how to budget the super-high end non-corn foods. We started to compare them all by price per pound and ingredients lists, and luckily, found 4Health. It is so much cheaper than S.D., or I., or any of the others, that we couldn't justify NOT buying it for our pets, even on a limited budget. I even showed our vet the ingredients list, which he approved...then told him the price, which is when he wrote down the name of the food & where to get it for his own animals! We switched our entire household of indoor & outdoor pets to this brand. Usually, a food switch takes a week of mixing 2 foods, old & new, so there are no stomach issues during the transition. I'd read other reviews of this product regarding sensitive stomachs, and decided to put the new food to the ultimate test. We switched straight away to 4Health, and threw the old ~cheap~ food out in the compost pile for the bugs. ;-) Amazingly, NO stomach problems! Indoor & outdoor cats & dogs gave me NO trouble about the new food, which surprised me because it wasn't NEAR as stinky as the old food...less stinky usually means our pets won't touch it. Our outdoor cats are those few who have roamed up & adopted us. We try the indoor route with all at first, but some just will not be "broken." It's important that the outdoor cats have a well-balanced food that will promote a healthy immune system, since they are exposed to neighborhood-roaming feral cats who make their weekly rounds through our yard. I know 4Health is as healthy for them as higher-priced brands, and the bonus is the affordability of it. Skin and coats are healthier, and there's less waste found while working in the flowerbeds. ;-) Less hairball activity, too. I couldn't be more impressed with this chow, and neither could our brood. Also using 4Health puppy and indoor cat food, with excellent results. Read other reviews--this brand has got to be one of the best kept pet food secrets! :-D

Two Deaths, Unfathomable Sickness & Suffering

I cannot begin to express the grief, sadness, and pain this food and company has caused us. The suffering our animals went through is beyond description. They did not deserve it and neither did we. We called to report an issue w/ food causing all of our cats to vomit. At the time, we thought it might be a bad batch. So we were told to throw it away. We were on auto ship, so opened another bag from a separate order (from two weeks later) and served that. Every cat in our family (all ages) became worse. Way worse and at a rapid pace. I called again, this time expressing fear and deep concern, but trying to keep my cool. Our cats were not only vomiting repeatedly, they became so severely dehydrated they could barely stand. Then they started vomiting blood. Poop and vomit were coming out of both ends at the same time, until they would literally collapse. This was not happening to any of them before the bags of food in question. In fact, we were loyal customers for many years. That is what makes this all the more disheartening and unacceptable. We also had 3 male cats that became blocked, as in, could not urinate. They were screaming in pain. Two had to have emergency P/U surgery to save their lives ($$$$) and one died because when they tried to drain his bladder, it exploded from the pressure! Blood went everywhere. They were in agony. In total, we saw three vets, one of which was an emergency vet. We were up for days on end, frantic with worry and trying to care for everyone. Another kitty, a healthy female (whose complete blood work the week prior to this indicated she was the picture of health) also died. She died unable to walk and unable to control her bowels or bladder and vomiting on herself. She went from being happy and healthy to gone. The same with our kitty that was blocked. He was only four and a happy, healthy boy. The kitties that had to have PU surgery had to both be hospitalized for a week. Our primary vet had to send home a massive amount of costly medication to treat everyone. Without exaggeration, I spent over a week with no sleep, doing laundry 24 hours a day, going back and forth to the vet, (none of which are close to our home) dispensing medication, and cleaning vomit and bloody poop off of our cats. The vet that had to do the surgeries is an hour and a half each way. It took over a week of this nightmare before any of our cats could hold any sort of food down. Even once they finally stopped vomiting, they did not want to eat due to nausea. We had to run IV's at home to help treat their dehydration. Clearly, we had to change foods immediately and throw all of the 4Health food in the trash. Without knowing the other vets had said it, each vet said whatever you are feeding them, STOP. That 110% the food that caused this. Toxic food. One asked what we were feeding our cats? We felt so ashamed. We trusted your food and company and we will never trust you again. Our cats are all indoor. They don't even drink tap water. Even their drinking water is from their own purifier faucet. We are considered to be extremely knowledgeable and responsible pet owners. I am an animal welfare author. I am going to make sure that anyone I come in contact with knows the suffering this food caused our family. I have done a lot of research and this food has serious issues that need to be addressed publicly. We are not the only people this has happened to. I have spoken with several pet nutritionists, and they did not seem surprised about what happened to us. Apart from the grief and loss, in total, all of this cost us the price of a new car. That might seem hard to process, but I have the receipts to prove it. You are selling pet food that is not safe. It is dangerous. No one can dispute this. We lived it. It happened. I gave your company over 6 weeks to reach out before posting this. And I was nice every time I called. But you have taken advantage of our kind nature by not responding. Therefore, I have every right to make what happened to us known to your current and potential customers. Everything I have stated here is true. I wish it were not, but it is. Every day I look at all of their faces and feel so guilty for feeding them 4Health food. And I look at two little cremation boxes with names of kitties that should still be here, wishing to God I had never purchased any food from your company. Again, I have every confidence that the dangers of this food (and even other pet foods) are going to come out in the very near future. I pray that others will take my warning seriously. It is not worth the risk. I love my animals more than life and would do anything for them. I think it is shameful and unforgiveable that this happened to them. I would never wish this on another person. Someone, somewhere within your company, knows full well there are issues with this food. Where is the accountability? Shame on you.
