Common patterns include turf tread, ribbed tread and lug tread. Turf tread has closely spaced blocks, ribbed tread has grooves running around the tire, and lug tread has more widely spaced, raised bars.
The tire is the outer part that contacts the ground. The wheel is the rigid part it mounts onto. A tire-and-wheel assembly combines both, while a tire-only replacement doesn’t include the wheel.
A tube-type tire holds air in a separate inner tube inside the tire. A tubeless tire holds air between the tire and wheel, with the tire’s bead forming a seal against the rim.
Pneumatic tires contain pressurized air and have a valve for inflation. Solid tires have a solid structure rather than an air-filled chamber, so they don’t require inflation.
The valve stem is the small fitting where you connect an air chuck or tire pressure gauge. On a tubeless setup, it mounts through the wheel. On a tube-type setup, it’s attached to the inner tube and extends through the wheel.
