Q: Can the water get too hot in the summer? I know the water can come out of the hose hot. How do I keep it from being too hot?

- A: Hi Rebecca! There are a few things that help with that. We recommend mounting the Fountain in the shade if possible and as close to the spigot as possible so you can minimize the amount of hose that is laying out across the yard in the sun (even better would be to be able to have a shorter hose - like use a splitter at the spigot and have a short hose to the Fountain and then your normal hose for day to day). If your setup requires a lot of exposed hose, cover it with mulch/leaves or bury it a bit if possible. Also, a frozen water bottle in the tank or just an occasional handful of ice if you're worried about it being too warm.3 months agoHelpful?

Good idea - cheap design - cheap parts

The basic concept is excellent. You connect a garden hose, the reservoir fills automatically, and six chickens can drink through the nipples without constantly dirtying an open water bowl. It is simple to install, keeps the water off the ground, and should eliminate a great deal of daily filling and cleaning.
Unfortunately, I am disappointed in the construction—especially considering that this waterer costs approximately $100.
My biggest concern is the cheap garden-hose connection. A metal hose end must be screwed directly onto plastic threads. That is a poor choice for an outdoor farm product that will be connected, disconnected, bumped, and pulled by the weight of a hose. It would have cost very little to install a brass or stainless-steel threaded fitting or bulkhead connection. Instead, the plastic threads feel like an obvious weak point that could eventually cross-thread, strip, crack, or begin leaking.
The internal valve and plumbing components also contain a considerable amount of thin, lightweight plastic that does not inspire confidence. Tractor Supply identifies the main material as HDPE, but I cannot find anything stating that it is UV-stabilized or UV-protected. Here in Texas, that matters. If the plastic is not properly protected from sunlight, I expect it to become brittle and begin cracking within a couple of years.
The fountain may operate exactly as intended, and I genuinely like the concept. However, at this price, I expected heavier construction, a metal hose connection, and clear confirmation that the plastic was designed for years of exposure to sunlight and outdoor weather.
I hope I am wrong about its longevity, and I will update this review after it has been outdoors for an extended period. For now, it feels like a very good idea built with materials that may turn it into a product that has to be replaced every two years.
