A sulfonamide antibiotic, Sulfamethoxazole works by limiting bacteria growth. This is achieved through trimethoprim, which starves bacteria replication of DNA. It also contains sulfonamides, which inhibit folic acid synthesis, a crucial DNA synthesis element.

Special Precautions

• This medication could be harmful to nursing or pregnant animals.
• Provide your pet with plenty of fresh water during treatment
• Contact your veterinarian if your pet exhibits unusual symptoms

• A urine test may show sulfa crystals in horses' urine. Ensure your horse is hydrated to avoid this. Trimethoprim sulfa may lead to fatal or severe diarrhea in rare cases. If your horse has changes in manure or develops diarrhea while on this medication, immediately contact a veterinarian.
• Less common side effects include:
  • Lethargy and pale gums from anemia
  • Tendency to bleed due to low platelets
  • Allergic reaction, including coma, pale gums, cold limbs, shock, sudden diarrhea, facial swelling, seizures, scratching, or hives.
