The combination of sulfadiazine and trimethoprim is helpful in horses requiring potent systemic antibacterial activity against susceptible organisms. Trimethoprim works by blocking the production of tetrahydrofolic acid in bacteria from dihydrofolic acid. It binds to and reversibly inhibits an enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase. Sulfadiazine is effective at inhibiting dihydrofolic acid bacterial synthesis by competing against para-aminobenzoic acid. These two antibiotic ingredients work together to double down on the metabolism of bacteria, depriving bacteria of the proteins and nucleic acids required for multiplication and survival. This product is highly antibacterial and typically bactericidal.

Side Effects

Potential side effects include:

• Antibiotic-related colic or diarrhea
• Tissue damage, swelling, or injection site discomfort with subcutaneous or intramuscular injection
• Altered bacterial flora and subsequent inactivity, weight loss, appetite reduction, abnormal stools, and intestinal inflammation in high doses
• Non-susceptible organism overgrowth
• Immediate anaphylactic or allergic reaction, resulting in agitation, respiration changes, hives, or swelling, which can be life-threatening and require epinephrine and immediate veterinary attention
• Short-term itching (pruritus) after intravenous injection
• Leukopenia (low count of white blood cells), thrombocytopenia (low count of platelets), or anemia (low count of red blood cells)
