Rated 3 out of 5 by from Kept starlings away, but ...... Unfortunately, these gray sunflower seeds were totally rejected by the birds in my yard. The birds made it their goal to empty the feeder by flinging the seeds onto the ground! I observed a single black headed grosbeak attempt to actually crack the seeds, but not very successfully. The seeds are apparently too hard for sparrows, purple finches and doves. The quality of the seeds appeared to be quite good, however, and would probably be fine for certain birds - just not my local birds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Value As good as any overpriced pet store sunflower seeds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good bye starling! I read that this type of sunflower seed is impossible for starlings to break with their beak. Absolutely correct! They have stopped raiding my platform feeder. Now I have to figure out how to keep them off the suet feed. (Yes, it is a squirrel proof suet feeder)

What is the difference between Gray Striped and Black Oil sunflower seed? Pros & Cons?

Asked by: Johnny Birdseed
Striped sunflower seed is larger and has a tougher striped shell. Jays, titmice, cardinals, grosbeaks and woodpeckers love striped sunflower and can handle the tougher, larger shells. Black oil seed has oil in the name refers to the higher oil content per gram in this smaller sunflower seed. Cardinals, chickadees, finches, sparrows, nuthatches, and many other birds prefer black oil sunflower over any other seed because of its high fat content and thinner shell which makes it easier for birds to open.

There was a lot of debris in my bag of striped sunflower seeds. About half of it was just opened empty shells. Is this normal.

Is this product heat treated to prevent germination? I have a customer who wants to use these to plant a sunflower garden and was wondering if these would grow actual sunflowers.

Asked by: Store manager
We do not treat our sunflower seed to stop germination however this is produced as wild bird food and not for human consumption. We cannot recommend that it be used for that purpose.
