Rated 1 out of 5 by from my birds love grey stripe sunflower seeds The last time I bought this same product I Opened the bag and found only shells. 20 lbs worth. Took back to Tractor supply. They gave me a replacement bag, but no additional compensation (like maybe a free bag) for my time ,and 50 mile round-trip drive to return- replace seeds.

What is the difference between Gray Striped and Black Oil sunflower seed? Pros & Cons?

Asked by: Johnny Birdseed
Striped sunflower seed is larger and has a tougher striped shell. Jays, titmice, cardinals, grosbeaks and woodpeckers love striped sunflower and can handle the tougher, larger shells. Black oil seed has oil in the name refers to the higher oil content per gram in this smaller sunflower seed. Cardinals, chickadees, finches, sparrows, nuthatches, and many other birds prefer black oil sunflower over any other seed because of its high fat content and thinner shell which makes it easier for birds to open.

There was a lot of debris in my bag of striped sunflower seeds. About half of it was just opened empty shells. Is this normal.

Asked by: Londa 5331

what is the largest sunflower seed you carry?

Asked by: PK12
The largest seed itself would be the gray stripe seed that is referenced, item 6851598.

Is this product heat treated to prevent germination? I have a customer who wants to use these to plant a sunflower garden and was wondering if these would grow actual sunflowers.

Asked by: Store manager
We do not treat our sunflower seed to stop germination however this is produced as wild bird food and not for human consumption. We cannot recommend that it be used for that purpose.
