Have bought for years. Never an issue. This last purchase (exp date 2028) gave us a scare. Usually my dogs bite at and pull the rolls apart. The soften with persistence and give resistance until they dont. This time I noticed the sound of crunching, but paid little attention. Accidentally kicked an unfinished, half eaten roll in the dark and noticed the sound it made was an odd rattling . Again paid no attention. Today in my dogs food bowl I saw glossy, greasy, jagged, and sharp, white shards in the kibble. Pulled out the 3 biggest chunks then noticed they were everywhere in the food (because we place unfinished rolls on the kibble for vacuuming or making it easier for the dogs to find). Took my pile to my roommate and she puzzled over them too before telling me tonight she vacuumed up a lot of that. I picked up one of the left over half rolls and it still rattled. I shook out the material and found more of the same shards. These are not the typical leathery and raw hide-like rolls we usually get at all. They almost seem like plastic. They give the feeling of knowing why we don't feed dogs bones that splinter. So the I pry open a half roll and find it was 2 pieces - the outer hide roll and a middle section which looked like hide, but just crumpled up. That was where the breakage happened. I could tell because the sharp parts were just like the shards. Now knowing what to look for I sawed through a fresh roll for a cross section inspection. Looked normal and safe. I did an end of another roll and it looked safe too. Gave the cut ended one to my big boy (120lbs catahoula) and a smaller 1/2 roll (that I just cut) to the midsized Queensland. Not a minute passed before I hear crunching again..dang it! Not good! So I replaced my big dogs his roll with the other half roll I had cut.He was interested but, only for a little bit. So I couldn't determine any crunchy sounds happening from the half roll that seemed safe. Now, I took a roll (one of the 2 original rolls I shook out shards from), and I have it soaking in water to see what happens. I'm really sad but more scared my dogs ate razor sharp, plasticy hard, shards. I'm going in to tractor supply tomorrow to remedy the purchase and warn them of a potentially harmful product. Finally, I feel that the poor-quality product, and the risk it poses to my dog is not on Tractor Supply. They were just placing a trusted product. I really feel that "Retriever" brand and company is the responsible party. They ought to be held responsible in the event of any unfortunate health problems the product could cause for our animals. I mostly share this to alert others. I didn't know where else to voice my concerns. # digestibility chewability
