The Triple Crown Safe Starch Horse Grass Hay Forage is a mixture of orchard and timothy hays that provide horses with their entire diet; forage, as well as vitamins and minerals. Featuring Triple Crown's unique EquiMix technology, the horse hay forage is specially selected and low NSC grass hay forage that is molasses and grain-free, and provides 6% fat. This horse hay is ideal for mature, metabolic and underweight horses. It helps support hay shortages, poor teeth and poor hay quality. Available as a 40 lb. bag.

I've been using Safe Starch for the last 3 years for my herd of rare ponies (and with any pony breed, they have their share of metabolic risks). I use it as a grain supplement - it keeps them full, and I haven't had concerns of founder during the spring grasses. I also feed it to my pregnant mares, and it's helped in producing healthy, hardy foals. I seriously recommend Safe Starch to anyone looking for either a supplemental filler, or for those who need actual forage for their horses who can no longer be on grass or rich grains. It's a life saver! And Triple Crown is a great company that takes pride in their products, which I appreciate. So glad Tractor Supply is now carrying this company and it's forages-in-a-bag since there are a very small handful of places in my state where I can order it.

formulation changed & inconsistent hay quality

I've been buying Triple Crown Safe Starch Forage for a long time, for at least 15 years. In the last year or so, I think, some time in 2025, they changed the formulation, and the quality and consistency has gone down. I have an elderly horse with Cushings who has been eating this food for years and years, and now he won't finish it. It smells different (not as nice), and clearly isn't as palatable. I regularly find sticks in it. It even say on the bag that it's suitable for horses with dental issues, and there are regularly STICKS in it. This isn't an inexpensive product, and if my horse isn't even eating all of it. I don't know what to do - My horse is also metabolic, and I've relied on this feed for years and spring is coming.
