A: Purina Precon Complete Starter Cattle Feed with RX3 is a specialized starter feed, not a grower-finisher, and it is designed to be fed as a sole ration without the need for additional grain or forage.

A: Thank you for choosing Purina products. The issue with any cattle product, whether it is feed, mineral or molasses tubs, is that these products are manufactured in the same facility as products with medications, such as Bovatec, that are harmful and even fatal for horses. Even if a product itself contains no ingredients that are toxic to horses, there is always the risk of possible contamination from a previous product that went through the plant that does contain these ingredients. If a medicated cattle product goes through a line and then is followed by a non-medicated product, there is a risk of some of the medicated product hanging up in the equipment somewhere and ending up in a subsequent product as it comes through the same line. Or there is the risk of an error in manufacturing where a medication is put in a batch of feed accidentally. That is why Purina doesn't make any horse product in the same facility where a medicated cattle feed is manufactured, we just don't want any risk at all of possible contamination or error that could be harmful to horses. Any time a product is used off-label, meaning feeding horses, goats, sheep, etc… a product labeled for cattle, the owner assumes any risk. I know it is difficult when multiple species are kept in the same pastures, but we just don't ever recommend exposing horses to cattle products due to this potential risk. A: This product is designed for the weaned calf/receiving phase. At a time where they are most susceptible to health challenges. We suggest making sure your cows have a good quality mineral, water, and 5-6 body condition score on a year-round basis.

A: Precon Complete is designed for preconditioning freshly weaned calves or newly purchased calves. Initially, feed this product at a minimum of 1.5% of body weight and gradually increase the feed rate to 3% of body weight. For example, a 500-pound calf would initially receive a minimum of 7.5 pounds per head per day and gradually increase up to 15 pounds per head per day.

A: I would start to change over gradually a few cups at a time and see how his digestion holds along with hay and fresh water everyday. If his digestion does well (no scours) then continue to gradually add up to the manufacturers recommendations.    MOST importantly I’d give him Probius paste or gel probiotics while transitioning. I’m not an expert but I’ve had good luck with that.
