The Eastern Redbud Tree aka the Judas tree offers one of early-season spring's most dramatic displays! The flowering tree produces stunning, rose-purple flowers that bloom profusely in the early spring before its heart-shaped leaves emerge. The Eastern Redbuds foliage grows blue-green and turns dark green in summer and yellow color during the fall season. The rosy pink flowers remain on the tree until the reddish-purple leaves turn for their fall color display. You will never see bare branches on this gorgeous privacy tree. The redbud flowers will eventually turn into seed pods that may lay dormant on the forest floor until germinating and turning into a new redbud Cercis tree. Some redbuds have white flowers but this Eastern Redbud tree puts out bright purple-pink flowers for all to see! Similar to its relative the Forest Pansy Redbud, they grow in most of North America and are native to the states of Oklahoma and Texas. They loved it so much they named it the state tree of Oklahoma. Alternatively, the bark of this tree was used by Native Americans to treat whooping cough. They boiled the bark to make tea. Interesting!

- This deciduous tree, Cercis canadensis, features multiple trunks that mature from 20 to 30 feet tall with an equally large branch spread of 25-35 feet wide. The trunks split close to the ground making a simple yet elegant form.
- The Eastern Redbud growth rate is moderate, up to 1-2 feet per year. As young trees, they can put on 7-10 feet of growth in the first few years. The fast growth habit is ideal if you are looking for height fast as the tree grows.
- The Eastern Redbud plant prefers medium, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It is an excellent choice as a street tree, flowering tree, or specimen and is known to attract butterflies to your landscape.
- Grow across the United States in USDA zones 4-9 in a variety of soil conditions but notably performs better in slightly alkaline soil pH. The small trees are very cold hardy!
- A layer of mulch during the winter will help retain moisture and protect the tree from impending cold temperatures and winds. A regular watering schedule is important the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. A drip line irrigation or tree gator will help with deep waterings.
- An annual application of slow release fertilizer at the top of the root ball will help protect the tree from pests and diseases like verticillium wilt. It is caused by a fungus that once penetrates the tree is almost impossible to cure.

Q: Will eastern redbud grow in Colorado?
a year ago- A: The Eastern Redbud can indeed grow in Colorado. While the tree prefers protection from extreme climate conditions, some cultivars do well in the state with minimal shelter and are hardy to temperatures as low as -30°F at elevations below 6,000 feet. They tolerate a variety of sunlight conditions, including partial shade, filtered sunlight, as well as full sun. Best Wishes, Kendalla year agoHelpful?
