Most grasses require at least four hours of sunlight to survive, which can make growing grass in shady areas a frustrating task. With the premium tall fescue varieties that The Rebels is known for, Shady Lawn Mix offers the ideal solution for these challenging areas. This grass is tough. It has thick, deep, and dense roots that result in excellent drought and traffic tolerance. Plus, it only needs 2 to 6 hours of sunlight. Plant it in early spring or early fall and see results in 8 to 16 days. A 3-pound bag covers up to 750 square feet for overseeding an existing lawn and 250 square feet for starting a new lawn from scratch. The Roots of the Rebels Brand dates back to 1979, when turf researchers at Rutgers University released a revolutionary new grass. Known as 'Rebel,' it was the very first example of what's now known as turf-type tall fescue. Compared to traditional tall fescue, Rebel offered lower growth, finer texture, darker color and denser turf plus the drought tolerance that makes turf-type tall fescue a homeowner favorite. Generations later, with up to 40 percent more roots than ordinary grass, The Rebels Brand Extended Root seed varieties represent the best turf-type tall fescue on the market. With roots like those, it's only natural that The Rebels Brand carries the Pennington name.

Lawn care prof. Opinion

I'm a landscaper who absolutely hates buying big box products from big box stores because they are usually overpriced junk in a shiny package. However, with no options left after trying all the "shade tolerant" blends that my landscape supply store caries to no avail. I decided to try to big blue home improvement store and buy this product. I aerated the lawn on a Wednesday and had no rain but had temp irrigation running on the area for 2 hours every morning, then finally got a good soaking rain on day 7 after seeding. On day 9 I took this photo. Day 9!!! Obviously I don't know the longevity and tolerance of this sprout but the germination time is astounding. As of now I highly recommend.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Trusted brand, Slope and Shade

I know shade grass is difficult to grow, but I have seen little to grow after several weeks and 2 seedings. I have enough seed left to attempt a third seeding so I expect it will be more different. I have used "regular Sun" Rebel with no issues on sunny areas for years.

Yes, I recommend this product.

This is perfect for shade!!

This is over a month progression. We first prepped the grass by using a tool to open the dirt all over the lawn and aerate. We put the grass seed into a manual seeding tool to release and disperse evenly over the lawn, we put down seeds and then bought a topper mix and covered it all with the topper. Within a week we started to see grass sprout up in areas, but mostly the shady areas. My lawn has shade and sun. It's not a very large lawn though, so i figured it was enough seed using one bag but i think i need to add more bags of seed because the grasses are not compact and there are spaces between. What i notice most is the densest grass is the shady areas, so i will have to get another grass seed for the sunny areas. In the sunny areas not much grass has grown. Overall I am happy to have received this product to test, and i like that it did fill in those shady spots that always end up bare. I'm glad i now know how to do this annually to keep a nice lawn for summer.

Yes, I recommend this product.
