Q&As

1 - 2 of 2 Questions

Q: Will this composter last thru winter? We get between 1 foot and ten feet of snow, down to 18℉ fairly often.

1 Answer
  • A: The Double Bin Rot Composter does have galvanized parts. The steel used to build our composters are made with a weather resistant powder-coated finish that protects from cracking, warping, rot or splinters. It is made to be rust-resistant. However, we recommend using a rust treatment for extra protection a couple times a year, especially if you live in a high humidity climate.

Q: How long does it take to compost a load?

1 Answer
  • A: Composting in a tumbler is much faster than composting in piles. Because you turn the compost every few days and thanks to the heat generated in the contained space, you can expect to turn your scraps into compost fairly quickly. How quickly? If you've got your mix just right, sometimes as little as two to six weeks. Refer to your manual for more information.

Does not hold up to what you would think for some called Lifetime...

This composter does not hold up to Phoenix, AZ weather. The summers here mercilessly hot and anything you buy that is going to get exposed to the sun must be tough. This material cannot hold up to what the expectations are from the company's self proclaimed namesake and advertising. There are a number of issues that come with this composter that only people who have been doing it for a while understand. This design is messy; if you water the compost which you have to do to keep it going, especially in the summer, it leaks through the bottom. Subsequently it can be gross to turn because the compost "tea" (the water that leaks from the compost bin) will get all over the place. This also accelerates the rusting of all the exposed metal parts, most importantly the bands and the hinges on the door. I regret buying this composter, not for the mess, which I can deal with, but the materials are terrible. I would even venture to guess given how badly the decomposed in heat that the composter's plastic materials themselves are getting into my compost and making it toxic... Anywho, buyer beware

Nice product - but full day build

The barrels seem nice, but definitely wasn’t prepared for the build process. Took two of us a good chunk of a day. Not the easiest project. One of the pins that held the locking mechanism in place broke. Luckily we had a spare that worked.

Double barrel composter

I just got this and thankfully I did not allow my husband to put it together by himself because it is definitely a two man job. They even give you two sets of instructions which I really appreciated; so I didn’t have to read over his shoulder. It was a lot of assembly but I think it will be a good composter.

No Aeration = No Worms = No Compost

We bought it on October 2025. It takes a lot of patience and time to put it together. After using it for 4 months, it does not have enough aeration to create the environment for worms to thrive. No worms = no compost. We've been composting in our California backyard for 20 years. Our 2 plastic bins were finally past repair. The Lifetime being elevated is a great concept, but it desperately needs a lot more air. We put a good amount of plant matter, etc. in one of the bins - instead of going from slightly smelly to no odor (this is a sign the worms are doing their job), it just smelled, there no worms - I had put a lot of worms in to get it started. It just smelled like rotting material. Compost when it is finished, has no odor. The Lifetime also has several rust spots which given the weight of the barrel when full, is disconcerting. I now prop the doors open so it gets more air - that takes away the heat it needs to make compost. It is a great concept with a serious design flaw.
