Q: Is a water hose required or can you pour water into the reservoir?

Q: I have a 38x10 foot metal building with two windows and a door for my dog kennels is this a good product to use in a high humidity state and will it cool off the inside ?

1 Answer
  • A: Our units are great for spot cooling and will have the most effect in the areas directly in front or using the swing function broaden coverage. On high heat days it will alleviate the ambient temps on higher humidity days you may want to run the pump a while then turn off as you could build up more humidity and create a hot humid environment. Always open a door or window to allow fresh air in and to help reduce humidity levels. We have a large number of customers that use these units for barns and kennels.

Better than expected in humid climate

I use the Hessaire MC18M near the Texas coast to provide spot cooling for rabbits in a well ventilated barn. I was skeptical about using evap coolers in such a humid environment, but another rabbit breeder’s success prompted me to give it a try. I chose the smallest model because of the price and because it was portable enough that I could put it where I needed it. I put the cooler’s output a few inches from the cage and see a 10-15 F drop between the ambient air temp and the output air without any dampness. I have since bought two more from another retailer. I wish they offered them in my local store. I deducted 1/2 point for being made in China and 1/2 point for engineering / design. The fan and motor feel solid, but the chassis build plastic feels a little thin for the job. When filling, I worry that the weight of the hose will break the filler door. When I removed the back, the float valve felt flimsy and misaligned. I fill it manually, so these may not actually be problems. The garden hose adapter is brass and feels solid, but I don’t use it at this time. Removing the back for cleaning required a Phillips screwdriver. I would like to see some sort of tool-less clip here, but that may add to the cost. Reinstalling the back took two tries due to the thinness of the plastic, but once the two pieces were aligned, it went together solidly and that greatly improved the rigidity of the unit. The pump, distribution system and evap media have shown no problems. I’m not about to get rid of my AC, but this seems like a good way to cool a couple people on a covered porch or a patio - or a larger area in a dryer climate.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Hessaire Evap Cooler - not working as I hoped

So far, it's not really working. It starts up and runs, but doesn't cool hardly at all. We're using it in an interior room of about 300 square feet in eastern Montana. We've got windows open on both ends of the room, but it's not cooling and instead is making the room very humid. Our outdoor humidity is about 30% right now. I've used swamp coolers very successfully in New Mexico, so can't figure out what might be wrong. We'll keep trying to get it to work, but there's a good chance we'll return it.

Great Cooler

I am using this in my 27 foot toy hauler and it really does a good job even without running my air conditioner it keeps it cool. I am in the New Mexico desert where humidity is low and plan to use this on solar power. It is just the right size not to big and not too small. I was skeptical at first till i got it. This is a great product for the price. Im satisfied very much.

It works for me

I purchased this for my greenhouse and only used it a few times so I don’t know how it will hold up next summer when I will be using it daily. It lowered the temperature and made it possible to work in it during the hottest time of day. The thermometer was maxed and the cooler got it below 100 degrees.

Great value cooler!

This cooler is very easy to set up and use. It’s portable and easy to move around. I use it in my barn aisle. I tried hooking up a hose directly to it and it sprayed water so I am filling up the reservoir instead of the direct water hook up. It’s definitely more quiet than most regular fans and much cooler.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Making our screened room comfortable in TX heat!

We purchased this cooler to add some "relief" to the TX heat outside in our screened room. We weren't sure how it would work; but if you are in front of it you will feel plenty of cool/ cold air. We hooked it to a generator during the recent Hurricane Laura power outage and slept in front of it in the screened room; I had to cover up with a blanket! So far we are very pleased with this purchase.

Works as described

This works as described. You just have to realize that evaporative cooling is very dependent on humidity. The more humid the less effective it is. However, it still puts out a good airflow and is relatively cool even on humid days. I use it for my dog kennels and they sit in front of it. It will run about a day on a full water reservoir....once again humidity dependent. The drying it is, the fast the water goes as it evaporates faster. Set up was a snap. I had it running in 10 min or less. Put on the casters, fill and turn on. It also has a feature for hose hook up so that it can run constantly.

Not as Hot in Texas Now

Works as advertised. High temp today was 103. Unit was putting out 84 degree air, a 19 degree spread. This is strictly a function of temperature and dewpoint. I've seen the spread in the week or so I've owned this unity range from 7 to19 degrees. Can't beat it without going to refrigerated air at twice the price, or more. Great for my workshop! Very pleased with the purchase.

Our animals love it and can cool off easily.

Works great for our cats and dogs outside, I put in some ice and cold water in the reservoir so it stays cooler longer, much better than a fan, but not cold as ac, can’t put ac out in an open shelter as it would be a waste. Our animals lounge in front of it all day.

Finally something that works .

I purchased this a month ago and couldn't be happier. This is basically a portable swamp cooler so it really only works in dry climates with little to no humidity . I live in Utah and it made life so much easier. Easy to fill but please don't forget to have a cracked window in the room you use it or it will not properly work. Tractor Supply provided me with great customer service and gave me the advice on how to get the most out of it. It cools off 3 central rooms I have when I only expected one lol

So far so good

Haven’t really completely filled the tank yet just tried it with 1 gallon and it’s cooler and circulates air better than a fan. Quiet. I suppose if you used very cold water and little ice it would really cool!

Excellent product!

I purchased this unit, and placed it in a Restaurant kitchen that averages a 105 degrees. It's so hot in the kitchen the air cooled ice machine, doesn't produce ice. This unit will cause temp to drop about 10 degrees, if you operate it on high fan and pump setting. The unit can be connected to a water hose, or filled manually . In the heat of the day, with deep fryers running, 2 grills running, and oven, it is miserablely hot, so we add ice to water. The air is cool, and makes it tolerable. The Cooks can definitely tell a difference. At night, the ice machine will make ice, with this unit running . I purchased in May, and it runs 24/7 . Alabama has hot summers, and no problems with this unit at all. I do clean and rinse filters 2x a week, due to grease produced in the kitchen. It is quiet, very well made, easy to setup. I highly recommend. I looked at many units, and the square footage, and price was the best I found. People told me that it would not work and that it was no more than a fan, but not true. 95 degree's in a hot commercial Kitchen is better than 105 degrees. When our heat index outside is over 3 digit's, our kitchen is bearable, and when temp outside is in the 80 degree range the kitchen is cool. My only regret is that I didn't purchase this unit along time ago.
