Q: Will this kill khaki weed?

2 Answers
  • A: Howdy neighbor! Gordon’s Amine 400 2,4-D Weed Killer can kill very young khaki weed seedlings, but it is generally not strong enough on its own to eliminate mature, established khaki weed. Because khaki weed is a aggressive perennial with a tough taproot and waxy leaves, a standalone 2,4-D herbicide will usually only curl the leaves rather than completely kill the plant.

Professional lawn care company uses this

Professional lawn care operator here. We've maintained over the years that this product has been one of the secret to our profits. It's one of (if not the) cheapest 2-4-d product on the market and it does a really good job. We use this product in the spring and fall to blanket spray our yards and it has literally saved us thousands of dollars over the years. A couple of things I've noted over the years to be aware of. 1. It does not kill really tough broadleaf weeds like woodsorrell, dollarweed or wild violet. Although for common broadleaf weeds like dandelions, clover, henbit, chickweed, etc. it does a great job. The label tells you which weeds it will kill and for the most part this has been right on. What we have started doing is noting which weeds the product doesn't kill and using a backpack sprayer with a stronger herbicide to spray those. 2. Although it does kill weeds in the wintertime it will not kill them as quickly as some of the other 2-4-D products on the market. So, if you are a professional and your customers want to see weeds die away quickly I would recommend using a stronger product when temps are below 50. Or, if you are confident in what you are doing, mix it half and half with a stronger 2-4-D product. This works well, too.   We typically mix 3/4 -1.25 oz per gallon in our 200 gallon tank sprayers. The amount depends upon the season. In the spring and summer when weeds are growing quickly and the temperatures are in the 70s and 80s we put 1 oz per gallon. In the summer when temperatures are in the 90s we drop it down to 3/4 oz to prevent stress to the turf. In the fall and early winter when weeds have slowed down and temperatures are in the 50s and 60s we put 1.25oz per gallon.  Overall great product. We highly recommend it.

I will mix it a little stronger.

I mixed it 2 ounces in a gallon. (1 ounce is the recommended). I will use 2 1/2 ounces in a gallon next time to see if it more fully kills the weeds.
