For years, this horse serum based antitoxin could be used on horses BUT somewhere in 2018 the following occurred: "Equine tetanus antitoxin is generally no longer advised or approved for use in horses because of the risk of transmitting equine parvovirus-hepatitis (EqPV-H), which is associated with a life-threatening condition called serum hepatitis (Theiler’s disease) in horses. The antitoxin is made from hyperimmunized horse serum, and equine parvovirus has been found contaminating these serum products. Regulations now require donor horses and finished products to test negative for EqPV-H before they can be used in horses, and many equine serum-derived products have been suspended or discontinued pending reliable testing for this virus." [Source: DVM360(dot)com et al] so, Tractor Supply, even though they could not take this back, gave me the TOXOID which I used instead. My mare exhibited a strong immune response (histamine response) to that so I could tell her immunity was still strong against tetanus even though it had been a few years since she was vaccinated against it. UNTIL THEY CLEAR ALL THE SERUM PRODUCTS, USE THE TOXOID unless you've never ever vaccinated the horse and wish to risk the Equine Parvo Virus. Titers to vaccines can last for a few years. It just depends upon the horse. Keep those tested if you do not believe in vaccinating every year. I'm sure this works on other animals, but check with your veterinarian. It says to use it with others. Just do NOT use it in equine. For this reason, I gave the product only 3-stars instead of 5. TSC needs to change how this is presented online. I did use some of this same brand, the antitoxin, on the same mare back in 2022 with no harm to her but I was unaware there could possibly be. They changed the labeling after a horse came down with parvo after an antitoxin shot. The Toxoid is made without using horse serum.
