Cold Steel Colichemarde Sword

I wanted to write this review because there's something that's definitely worth mentioning about this sword and I've never heard anyone else mention it in reviews. Unlike original period smallswords, the Cold Steel Colichemarde Sword is sized up to actually fit an average-sized modern adult. This is really important. Instead of being a strict reproduction of an antique original, this Cold Steel version is a practical weapon for the men and women of today. If you've ever held antique originals, you'll notice that the grip is super small and the blade length is closer to 29" or 30". Cold Steel gives us more blade length, a longer colichemarde (wide) section and a grip that's actually comfortable for a well-nourished modern man to hold. I really like this sword. It has the beefiness of a spadroon but the elegance of a court sword. It really is something special. The edges are sharp from hilt to point and this thing can actually deliver some cuts to soft targets. The colichemarde section is basically 1/3 of a broadsword blade. Being the lower 1/3 of the blade doesn't make it easy to cut with but it can be done. The edges are a bit toothy. It's worth the little bit of extra elbow grease to clean up the edges with a 3000 grit stone. They clean up nicely. I think the edges are better used as a deterrent to anyone who tries to grab the blade rather than for cutting. The grip is double wire-wrapped. The finer inner wire is super tight and there is virtually no risk that it would ever get loose. The coarse outer wire wrap moves around just a little. This is normal for this type of grip wrapping. Overall, it looks and feels quite nice and provides a positive gripping surface. The balance of this sword couldn't be better. The overall weight is on par with a military spadroon which would seem pretty heavy for a smallsword. However, you've got to remember that this Cold Steel sword is sized for a modern person and not a tiny little 18th Century person. The entire hilt section has some weight and this balances the sword nicely and makes point manipulation quite easy. The profile taper of the blade also assists in this regard. Bottom Line: It's a great sword and definitely a conversation piece. You're not likely to have too many friends with a sword like this. In addition to being quite beautiful, this is a capable weapon.

You should improve the wire wrapping of the handle. It's kind of loose after a short period of usage, and flairs up little bit like a spring, not much but enough for it to feel weird and give less grip.
