The introduction of horses to the Americas by settlers and explorers inexorably changed the lives of the indigenous peoples. Relied upon for travel, hunting, and warfare, these horses bore significant cultural and social value. Examples of spotted horses can be seen throughout European history, including amongst the horses exported to the Americas. These horses were traded with, and eventually bred by, the Nez Perce tribe. In addition to endurance, strength, and sure-footedness, the Nez Perce tribe selectively bred their horses to retain the unique spotted coat patterns. Beautiful and hardy, these horses were essential to traverse the challenging miles of terrain between the tribe's seasonal encampments. Today, the Appaloosa remains a versatile, agile, and colorful breed.
