With roots that are thought to trace back to the "Great Horses" ridden by knights in battle, the Shire breed began in rural England. Working farmland and pulling delivery wagons, the strong yet willing Shire was integral to agriculture and commerce. However, when the industrial revolution made work possible without horses, the Shire's population diminished. While currently listed as "critical" by The Livestock Conservancy, the Shire's numbers are slowly increasing as awareness of this incredible draft spreads. Modern Shires can reach upwards of 17 hands, with feathered legs and powerful bodies. Most coats are black, bay, or brown, but gray and chestnut are also seen. While they're still fantastic work horses, they also are beloved pleasure riding and driving horses! Gentle Blake has a stunning coal-black coat, which is accented by his arched neck and big white blaze and stockings. He exemplifies the breed standard, with his deep girth, noble head, and power evident in his strong frame.
