- A: The overflow is a closed tube on the back of the rain barrel. If you would like to divert excess water out of the rain barrel, you can cut off the end of the tube to open it and add a 1.5” hose. The other end of the hose can be directed to the desired location for excess water. An alternative would be a rain barrel diverter kit which can be installed into the current system. The part number for the diverter kit Is 810524 years agoHelpful?

There are better rain barrels

Sadly, these rain barrels we ordered from the Tractor Supply are of poorer design for dealing with water overflow than those they are replacing in our yard, which we also purchased from Tractor Supply a number of years ago. Also one of the barrels came with a weak spot in the top portion of the barrel that turned into a hole when my finger went through it while moving the barrel into place. I repaired the hole with flex tape and sealant. We're using the barrels anyway but would not buy them again.
