Alfahay comes in a 50 pound bag and is the closest thing to fresh cut alfalfa. Alfahay is a NON-GMO alfalfa that is fermented with apple cider vinegar. Alfahay is a 50% moisture product and will be moist. Alfahay is for horses, cattle, pigs, deer, goats, sheep, birds, and exotics. Unlike other feeds that are dried, Alfahay is cut and packed with its natural moisture. This locks in all the fresh nutrition of the plant. Alfahay then undergoes a fermentation process after being bagged to produce beneficial yeasts and bacteria. That's why we call it "Probiotic Alfalfa In A Bag." Yeast Cultures will be white, circular shaped, and are GREAT for your animals. Please see photos. Some animals may take longer to become accustomed to Alfahay while others will eat it right away. They are all different - be patient and give them time to investigate it.

For additional information on this product, please see the Product Documents section for all downloadable user manuals, installation guides, brochures and warranty statements.

  • Alfahay is for horses, cattle, pigs, deer, goats, sheep, birds and exotics
  • Unlike other feeds that are dried, Alfahay is cut and packed with its natural moisture - 50% moisture level
  • The nutrients are more readily digestible by animals due to the fermentation process
  • Alfahay increases brain function by increasing essential amino acids
  • Alfahay promotes healthier, well-nourished skin
  • Alfahay ensures that the animals' digestive and immune systems stay healthy
  • Alfahay's moisture level makes chewing easier for the animal
  • Alfahay undergoes a fermentation process using apple cider vinegar to promote the growth of yeast colonies and good bacteria
  • Long shelf life when stored properly (12 to 16 months)
  • Grown in the richest soils of the midwest
  • Non-GMO
  • Dust free, which eliminates respiratory issues in animals sensitive to dust and mold spores
  • Alfahay is compact so it takes up less room than conventional hay and is able to be stored outside
  • Normally all Alfahay is eaten by the animal, leaving no waste
  • Alfahay strives to produce the highest quality product so customers can produce the best animals
  • Natural bacteria and yeast cultures make Alfahay a 'Probiotic in a Bag'
  • Fermented with Apple Cider Vinegar
  • PLEASE REMEMBER: Alfahay is a 50% moisture product - therefore yes, the product is supposed to be moist.
  • Note: After opening your bag of Alfahay, we recommend feeding it within 7-10 days; if you cannot feed it within that time frame, store it in a cool, dark place; you can also put the bag into a large plastic tub with a lid, this will help extend the life of an open bag

Q: Does a spoiled bag smell rancid and like vomit when opened? I bought my fourth bag today at TSC and it smelled very off. TSC is going to replace it.

1 Answer
  • AI-generated, Human-approved
A: Spoiled bags can smell rancid and unpleasant. The product is fermented with apple cider vinegar, so it should normally smell like vinegar or have a fermented, pickle-like scent. If a bag smells rancid or significantly off from that typical vinegar smell, it may be spoiled, especially if the bag was torn or improperly sealed.

A: Hi HollerFarmstead - please be sure to read about the natural yeast cultures that occur during the fermentation process. Many people mistake this good bacteria for mold spots. There is a section on the back of the bag regarding these, a large article with photos on our website, and many posts on our Facebook page. Thank you - Alfahay's Office Manager

A: Hello Razanbrandy! Alfahay can range in color from bright green - dark green - green/brown-ish/yellow. This is due to the fermentation process. There are many photos on TSC's website, Alfahay's website, and Alfahay's Facebook page if seeing photos would be more helpful. Thank you - Alfahay's Office Manager

Most Helpful Favorable Review

So happy to see TSC carrying Alfahay!

I love this product for my dairy goats! I see a lot of reviews stating the product was moldy and there was moisture in the bag. The hay is supposed to have moisture and the "mold" is actually little yeast colonies from the fermentation process that are supposed to be in the product. AlfaHay's customer service is top notch for helping consumers understand this. I would recommend reaching out to them with questions or concerns.

Alfahay Haylage in 50lb. bag

the alfalfa Alfahay 50lb. bag, was so wet that it had mold throughout it. Also the quality was comparable to straw that had gone through a chipper. The color of this product was yellow & brown. My animals wouldnt touch it, even when i tried mixing it w my dry alfalfa.

poor quality

I bought this because I was unable to get Chaffhaye, my usual fermented alfalfa brand, before I ran out. It is poor quality compared to Chaffhaye (there is a local supplier in Plymouth). This hay is coarser and has an unpleasant smell. My horses ate it but not enthusiastically like the other brand. It works in a pinch, but not great.

This is disgusting

This stuff looks terrible and smells even worse. It’s so wet and super dark, and has what appears to be mold vs yeast or whatever they say is in it. I won’t even let my animals try it because I’m afraid they will get sick from it. Very disappointed with this product.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hard to order

We feed this to our goats, and they love it and the health benefits are amazing, but trying to order it is awful. It stays in "processing" for days, so you never know if or when it will arrive. It makes it really hard to maintain a consistent feeding schedule.
