Alfahay comes in a 50 pound bag and is the closest thing to fresh cut alfalfa. Alfahay is a NON-GMO alfalfa that is fermented with apple cider vinegar. Alfahay is a 50% moisture product and will be moist. Alfahay is for horses, cattle, pigs, deer, goats, sheep, birds, and exotics. Unlike other feeds that are dried, Alfahay is cut and packed with its natural moisture. This locks in all the fresh nutrition of the plant. Alfahay then undergoes a fermentation process after being bagged to produce beneficial yeasts and bacteria. That's why we call it "Probiotic Alfalfa In A Bag." Yeast Cultures will be white, circular shaped, and are GREAT for your animals. Please see photos. Some animals may take longer to become accustomed to Alfahay while others will eat it right away. They are all different - be patient and give them time to investigate it.

- Note: After opening your bag of Alfahay, we recommend feeding it within 7-10 days; if you cannot feed it within that time frame, store it in a cool, dark place; you can also put the bag into a large plastic tub with a lid, this will help extend the life of an open bag

Alfahay is to be used for the portion of the animals roughage intake. The normal intake per day of Alfahay is very different from animal to animal. Age, condition, workload, and other feed intakes will factor into how much Alfahay the animal eats per day. Start by feeding 1 pound per hundred weight per day to horses and equivalent sized animals. Feed 2 pounds per hundred weight per day to smaller animals like deer and goats. Gradually (over 7-14 days) increase the quantity until you feel the desired condition of the animal is achieved. Alfahay is not to be used as the only source of feed.

This product is either good or terrible, depending on the condition of the bag when you receive it. If the bag has a hole in it - any size hole at all - the product inside turns into a mold farm. I'm not talking about the white "good stuff" fermentation indicator the manufacturers describe; I'm talking about blocks of multicolored molds that my goats won't eat even if I would let them. And with time, the whole contents of a 50# bag with a hole in it becomes one dense block of heavy, slimy, muck. So far, I've put 2 entire bags directly into my compost pile. Bottom line: this product can be a good sub for hay when it's in good condition; very expensive compost when it's not.

I like the quality of Tractor Supply and the variety of products they offer for running a homestead, farm, or ranch. There are always good specials taking place and with the new outdoor section it increased our times coming back to shop at the Greeneville, TN location. Almost every time we come into town from our rural location, we stop at Tractor Supply for feed, fencing, books, gifts, clothing, the dog washing station, and many other products.

Great for my old horse
