A motor or engine drives an exciter with rotating, off-center weights. As those weights spin, they create vibration that passes through the machine’s base plate to the ground.
A forward plate compactor travels in one direction while vibrating. A reversible plate compactor has controls that let the operator switch between forward and backward travel without turning the machine around.
Plate compactors can run on gasoline engines, diesel engines or electric motors, including battery-powered options. The power source determines whether the machine needs fuel, a charging setup or an electrical connection.
Vibration frequency tells you how many vibration cycles the machine produces over a set period. It’s commonly listed as vibrations per minute or hertz. This is a separate specification from engine speed.
Routine upkeep generally includes clearing buildup from the base plate and checking belts, fasteners and vibration mounts. Engine-powered models also need oil and air-filter service. Follow the owner’s manual for maintenance intervals and any exciter lubrication requirements.
