Chicken Coop Fly Control

Keeping flies out of the chicken coop starts with good coop sanitation and regular cleanup. Remove chicken manure, wet bedding, spilled feed, and rotten scraps often, since these attract house flies, blow flies, and other poultry pests. Use dry pine shavings, straw, or another absorbent bedding material, and replace damp or heavily soiled areas right away. Clean beneath roosts, around nesting boxes, and near feeders and waterers, where manure and moisture tend to build up. Store chicken feed in a sealed metal or heavy-duty plastic container, sweep up spilled grain, and keep the ground around the coop as dry as possible. Good ventilation also helps reduce moisture and odor, making the chicken house less inviting to flies and helping create a healthier environment for your flock.

For additional chicken coop fly control, use fly traps, sticky strips, bait stations, or an approved poultry-safe fly control product according to the label directions. Place traps and bait where chickens, pets, and children cannot reach them, and never apply insecticides directly to chickens, eggs, feed, or water unless the product label specifically allows it. Fly predators can also help reduce the number of fly larvae in manure and bedding, while screens on windows and doors can keep adult flies from entering the coop. Check the chicken house regularly for hidden wet spots, broken waterers, manure buildup, and other conditions that can lead to a fly infestation. A steady routine of coop cleaning, proper waste management, sealed feed storage, and safe pest control is the best way to control flies around chickens throughout the warm season.
