Chicken Coop Disinfectants

Keeping a chicken coop clean and disinfected helps reduce bacteria, viruses, mold and parasites that can affect backyard chickens. Start by moving the flock, feeders, waterers, bedding and nesting materials to a clean area, then remove manure, feathers, spilled feed and other organic matter from the chicken house. Scrub roosts, nest boxes, walls, floors and equipment with warm water and a poultry-safe cleaner before applying a chicken coop disinfectant. Cleaning first is important because dirt and manure can make disinfectants less effective. Look for a farm or poultry disinfectant labeled for use around chickens, and always follow the product label for mixing directions, contact time, ventilation and rinsing requirements.

Apply chicken coop disinfectant to cleaned surfaces with a pump sprayer, garden sprayer or other recommended applicator, making sure cracks, corners, hinges, roost supports and nesting areas are covered. Allow the coop to stay wet for the full label-listed contact time, then rinse surfaces if the instructions call for it and let everything dry completely before returning the flock. Wash and disinfect chicken feeders, poultry waterers, egg trays and removable nest box parts separately, replacing heavily soiled bedding and damaged materials as needed. Never mix bleach, ammonia, vinegar or other cleaning chemicals, and keep chickens away from wet disinfectant, strong fumes and treated surfaces until the coop is fully dry and well ventilated. Regular spot cleaning, fresh bedding and routine coop disinfection can help maintain a healthier environment for laying hens, chicks and the whole backyard flock.
