Q: How can hydraulic oil have a freezing point of 32 degrees F unless it has water in it?

1 Answer
  • A: Hi Neighbor- SAE 20 hydraulic fluids typically exhibit an operational freezing point (or pour point) around \(-10^{\circ }\text{F}\) to \(+32^{\circ }\text{F}\). This happens because the heavy, unblended mineral base oils used in this formulation naturally thicken in colder weather, which causes the fluid to become sluggish and gel.
