- A: Farm jacks need weight on them to ratchet back down. Because your TravellerX 5,000 lb. Farm Jack is a mechanical, ratcheting jack, it requires a minimum load of 150 lbs to force the alternating climbing pins to release and walk down the steel bar. If you are trying to test the jack with no load on it (or if you already lifted something and just took the weight off), flipping the lever down and pumping the handle will do nothing—the pins will simply stay jammed in the holes How to get it back down safely: 1. If there is NO weight on the jack: Keep the reversing lever in the down position. Firmly hold the main steel upright bar with one hand, and use your foot or a friend's foot to press heavily down on the large lifting nose (the part that goes under a vehicle). While putting weight on it, pump the handle up and down. It should begin ratcheting down. Once it clears the tension, the entire running gear mechanism can be slid manually all the way down to the base. 2. If it is brand new and sticky: New farm jacks frequently bind because of thick factory paint or powder coating inside the pin holes. Spray the two alternating climbing pins, the small springs behind them, and the vertical bar generously with a light lubricant like WD-40 or a garage door lubricant. Avoid heavy grease, which attracts dirt. 3. If it is currently holding up a vehicle/load: Ensure you are holding the handle with both hands. With the lever down, pump the handle all the way up and all the way down. The jack will only lower one notch at a time on the upstroke of the handle—you must complete the full motion of the handle to trigger the pins to swap places. Never place your head, hands, or body directly over or within the path of the handle. If a farm jack unbinds suddenly under pressure, the handle can violently fly upward13 days agoHelpful?
